While Rio Tino Alcan BC Operations has long ceased to be Kitimat’s only employer, its operations remain a vital component of the local economy. They are also important in the regional and provincial contexts, and are one of the single largest sources of B.C. value-added manufacturing exports.

Each year, Rio Tinto Alcan BC commissions an assessment (48KB pdf) of its direct economic contributions within the province, with regional and community breakdowns. This provincial economic impact exceeds a quarter of a billion dollars annually. Key components include payroll and benefits, goods and services, pension payments, and property taxes.
