Alcan B.C. Year 2000 Highlights

  • Approval and initial implementation of a five-year Environmental Improvement Program to address underlying causes of regulatory non-compliance

  • Continued implementation of a Pollution Prevention (P2) Plan to move beyond regulatory compliance through the reduction or elimination of pollutants at source — Alcan has either reached its targets, or is on schedule to do so, with respect to 15 of 18 P2 opportunities

  • Surpassed previous reduction target for greenhouse gas generation, with ongoing year-to-year improvements targeted

  • Continued implementation of cost savings as part of Alcan Inc.’s Full Business Potential program — Alcan B.C. is on-track to achieve its targeted profitability improvement of $40 million

  • Increased hot metal production — at 271,770 metric tonnes, production returned to the levels typically achieved in the early 1990s

  • ISO 9002 registration for the quality management systems in Casting and Wharf Operations and the Potlining Department

  • Reductions in both the frequency and severity of accidents, and provision of safety culture training to more than 1,000 employees

  • Support for a range of initiatives benefitting B.C. communities where Alcan operates and the province as a whole — including the Kemano Public Safety Initiative and a wide range of projects supported through Alcan’s Community Investment Fund

  • Continued dialogue with stakeholders in operating communities through consultative forums such as the Nechako Watershed Council, and through the development and implementation of relationship agreements with First Nations

  • Continued exploration of the potential for expanded production capacity at Kitimat Works by means of a rebuild employing new, more productive and environmentally superior technology
