Introduction

About This Report

This document is the seventh annual performance report produced by APM-BC, and covers the 2005 calendar year. It reviews key initiatives and outcomes under three main headings: environmental and occupational health and safety (EHS) performance, economic performance, and social performance. These correspond approximately to the three commonly accepted pillars of sustainability.

While the content of the report evolves from year-to-year, there is a high degree of comparability from one report to the next within the series, and historical trends are presented when relevant and available. Wherever feasible, the report focuses on specific targets and/or quantifiable outcomes.

The report provides a brief and high-level overview of key issues among the many that collectively impact the net benefits APM-BC generates, and the sustainability of its operations. The environmental section, for example, does not attempt to comprehensively report on releases to the environment. Rather, it reports on specific ones selected based on impact or relevance, and scope or materiality.

This report has been prepared primarily for the benefit of external stakeholders, including residents of operating areas, customers, investors, and regulators. While consultations specific to this reporting exercise are not conducted, the content of the report is informed by ongoing dialogue with all of these stakeholders, and by feedback on previous reports.

In preparing this report, reference was made to third-party guidelines for sustainability-related disclosure. This included guidelines produced by the Global Reporting Initiative (draft “G3” guidelines). The degree of accordance with GRI guidelines is incremental rather than full. This is in part a result of this report’s modest scope, and of its applicability to only a single operation within a much larger corporate entity.
