About this Report
This is the ninth annual performance report produced by Rio Tinto Alcan Primary Metal BC and covers calendar year 2007. It is part of a broader disclosure and sustainable development-related performance management framework. While there is continuity with respect to the key data and issues included in earlier reports, this report follows a format first adopted for 2006.
The report is structured around eight focus areas. They represent challenges and opportunities that are of particular relevance to the pursuit of sustainable development within the aluminum industry. They provide a framework for both reporting and for integrated efforts to analyse and address sustainable development-related issues.
This report has been prepared primarily for the benefit of external stakeholders, including residents of operating areas, suppliers, customers, investors, and regulators. Consultations specific to this reporting exercise are not conducted, but the content is informed by ongoing dialogue with stakeholders and feedback on previous reports.
Reporting relates to Rio Tinto Alcan’s primary metal operations in British Columbia and, unless otherwise noted, excludes the small Strathcona coke calcining plant located in Alberta (which is part of Rio Tinto Alcan Primary Metal BC for corporate organizational purposes).
Content has been selected and presented with reference to third-party recommendations, such as those of the Global Reporting Initiative. This report, however, provides a high-level overview and applies to a single operation rather than a complete corporate entity. No declaration is made as to a formal application level of the GRI guidelines.
